Web pages don't download fully

When I attempt to access a website, first the text and graphics start to show on the screen. Then, before the whole page has been downloaded, the Done message appears and I am left with half an image or no image in many of the designated areas. I try refreshing the screen: sometimes it works, sometimes not. Often, the 'page cannot be found' screen appears.

Also, when I log on to collect my emails it takes ages to get a response. A friend suggested that it might be the extension cable that I am using to connect the computer to the telephone socket.


It's not a problem with your computer or cabling. The most likely culprit is congestion at your ISP, or on the internet in general. What appears to be happening is that the period allowed before a connection 'times out' with no response seems to have been reduced by ISPs. If the initial attempt to access a site fails with no response, you will see the 'page not found' screen. If individual items on a page fail to download, you'll see a broken link (in the case of an image) or as much of the file as you got. If this happens during a file download you'll end up with an incomplete ZIP file or a setup program that won't install.

Our tip Find a website, anonymously demonstrates that it's possible to access a site that appears to be unreachable if you go via a different route. This suggests that congestion at some points on the internet is the root cause of the problem. Using the Tracert command (see tip Trace your route on the internet) you can prove if this is the case. All you can do about it, though, is look for a better ISP (though that won't help if the congestion is outside its network) or surf during the early hours of the morning when the web is less busy.
